+ ...a new walk - 29th August 2010 (29/08/2010 - 20:02:25)
Burwell to Reach via Weirs Drove and Reach/Burwell road .
Along the track around the eastern side of Reach, then past Water Hall and Spring Hall to Little Fen Road.
Little Fen road to Tubney Fen and across Tubney Fen to Straight Drove.
Crossing Straight Drove to pass the small lake to Reach Lode.
Reach Lode to the lone willow .
Reach lode to Burwell via Hightown Drove and the Weirs.
For todays walk the weather was fine but windy with a light shower for the return along the Weirs.
Distance walked about 7.5miles
Todays walk was an abridged version of the two rivers walk.
Following the Burwell Lode we made
our way to the Cock Up Bridge. Then continued along the river side for about
175m to the path crossing the fen to the left to the barns at Burwell Fen.
From
the barns we followed the path crossing the fen to the Reach Lode about 750m
ahead. Following the river to the left we headed towards Reach .As we approached
Tubney fen we diverted around the small lakes edge to join Straight Drove
for the walk into Reach. Taking the path around the eastern side of the village
we made our way to Burwell road to then return to the Anchor via the Weirs road
and the track past the recreation ground to Anchor Lane.
The walk was undertaken by 4 walkers and the weather was hot and humid with a welcome light breeze at times....

For today’s walk we had some typical Bank holiday weekend weather in the form of a grey cloud cover and a cold biting north easterly wind.
Our walk took us along North Street to Howlems Balk. Following the track we made our way to Ness Road. Crossing the road we joined the green track of Haycroft Lane for 1.6km to Beacham’s House at the end of North End in Exning.
Following the track along the bed of the old railway we made our way to the Newmarket road.
Walking along the road side (bypassing the bridge) we made our way back to Burwell.
Once back at Pound hill we returned to the Anchor via Parsonage Lane, Low Road and Hythe Lane and along the river to Anchor Lane.
The walk undertaken by John,George, Brian, Bob the elder, Bob the younger and Trevor…..
Despite the steady downpour we left the Anchor, turning left at the Anchor Bridge, following the river past the Recreation Ground, and on to the The Weirs, eventually turning right on to Reach Road.
After about 1 km, we took the footpath on the right, just after the bungalow, and headed round the back of Reach until we got to Reach Lode, then followed this as far as Hurdle Hall. Some of us did our impression of the Time Team, or was it the 'Last of the Summer Wine' as we started to look for ancient artefacts...!
Walking down Hurdle Hall Drove, we turned right onto Hightown Drove, then at the end turned left back on to The Weirs, and so back to the pub...
On the walk were David, Pauline, John, Dick, Bob the Younger, Bob the Elder, Brian and George, and later we all met up with Liz, and Sue in a very busy Anchor...here's to next week..

For todays walk we were treated to
some glorious sunshine for the whole walk with hardly any breeze. And
it was nice to welcome Belkis back to join us.
From the Anchor we set off
along North Street and then Dysons Drove to cross the river. Taking the path on
the right we followed the river to Second Drove to walk the short
distance
to join the Broads road.
Following the permissive path
beside a hedge we made our way over the hill to Ness Road. Crossing the road we followed
the path across the fields to the small wood beside the New River.
Following the river we made
our way back to Ness Road. Recrossing Ness Road we
joined a farm track between Tollgate and Ness farm
After 400m the track turns left to head for Broad Farm 600m ahead. From the farm we now had the 2.6km walk along Broads Road and North Street to return to the Anchor.
From the Anchor we made our
way along North Street to Dysons Drove.
Turning left we
followed Dysons Drove and Factory Road to the old brick pits.
Now turning right along a track just
before the pits we made our way along the side of the old pits and then across
a field .
Crossing a footbridge at the
fields edge we joined a track to the right to make our way to the New River.
Crossing a farm bridge we
turned right along the river for 2.2km to a footbridge over the
river about 100m from the railway.
Once across the bridge our path was to the right for 200m to a hedge and side drain.
Turning left we followed
the hedge for 550m to join a farm track. Now turning right we made our way to Broads Farm 600m ahead. Joining the road we walked 2.6 km to return to the Anchor
As we made our way back we took a small detour along Second Drove to walk along the side of the Catchwater drain to Dysons Drove.
Again the weather stayed sunny for us but we still had a cool breeze.

For Sunday's walk we split into two groups. One group doing a short walk and the rest doing a longer walk .
Both groups left the Anchor and
walked along the riverside to Hythe Lane and then along the Weirs to Hightown
Drove.
Following Hightown Drove to Hurdle Hall drove both groups made their way to the Reach Lode.
George,Brian and Bob the elder
then turned left along the river to Reach to then walk along the track
along the edge of the village to join the Burwell road for their return.
Five of us turned right along the
river to make our way to the site of the new bridge to be built across the
river at the end of Hightown Drove.
Going down the bank we joined the
path across Burwell Fen to Burwell Fen Farm to turn right to join the path to
the Burwell Lode. Crossing the footbridge we returned to Burwell along
the northeastern bank of the river.
The weather managed to keep
dry for us while we walked but the wind was rather cold.
We had an enjoyable, if somewhat windy walk on Sunday.....
Starting from the Anchor we walked along the Burwell Lode until we reached the Cockup bridge, then crossed over and before reaching Priory Farm took the first left along Harrison's Drove for about 500 yards, then turned right and walked along the raised path that leads to Monks Lode.
We took a left towards the GOBA moorings, then branched right and continued on the path that leads to the National Trust Visitor Centre at Wicken. After passing Breed Fen Drove on our left and the car park on our right we turned right along the footpath that passes behind Wicken Mill, where we were treated to a very informative guided tour by one of the volunteers working at the mill. With the strong wind pushing the sails around at a fair pace it made for an interesting experience...!
Leaving the mill we continued back past Priory Farm to cross over the Cockup bridge, for the return leg along the Lode back to Burwell....but not before John's cap decided to take a swim in the river...but to the rescue came Bob the Elder with his walking pole, with which Pauline displayed her superb fishing skills and retrieved said cap from the water..!
Bob (written in Trevors's temporary absence due to a golfing weekend...!)
This Sunday's walk was along the Weirs and up to and along the Devils Dyke.
The walk was undertaken by 8 walkers, with Faye joining us again accompanied by her daughter Sharon.
We were treated to some fine weather with a few scattered high clouds and a light breeze at times.
The views from the highest point on the walk on the side of gallows hill were a little hazy in the distance, but you could still see Ely cathedral and Addenbrookes Hospital.
The return to Burwell was via the permissive path along the hedge from the dyke to and then along Heath road.

As we entered Wicken we followed the path along the edge of the village to the Wicken Fen visitor centre.
The return to Burwell followed the Wicken Lode to Normans bridge to then take the path along the raised bank to Harrisons Drove.
Following the drove to the left we returned to the Cock Up Bridege to cross the Lode to then walk back along the river to Burwell.
